1971年1月11日，Mary J. Blige出生在美国纽约最北部的The Bronx区，但是他早年的时光确实在佐治亚州的港口城市Savannah度过的，后来她和母亲、姐姐一起搬到了纽约东南部的Yonkers，但是童年带给她的只有创伤。不久她从高中辍学，和她的母亲一起打点理发室。在她16岁时，有一次她在纽约White Plains的一家卡拉OK演唱Anita Baker的《Caught Up in the Rapture》，并录制成了磁带，她的声音就把Uptown Records唱片公司的总裁Andre Harrell吸引住了，很快她就得到了该公司的合同，但开始她只是在公司做些幕后工作，比如给大牌歌手做背景和声等。

Blige发行了第二张专辑《My Life》，在专辑中Mary J. Blige讲述了她曲折的童年生活，但是在这张专辑以后，Mary J. Blige和Uptown Records唱片公司以及Sean “Puffy“ Combs的关系开始变得紧张，最终她和MCA唱片公司签约。

　　　　1997年，Mary J. Blige发行了第三张专辑《Share My World》，尽管评论界说她失去了那种风格融合的特点，使专辑变得平庸，但是专辑的高销量的势头还是不可低档。在这期间，Mary J. Blige的形象开始渐渐转变，她开始慢慢的摒弃一些自身的坏毛病，诸如懒散和暴力倾向等，到了1999年，她的第四张专辑《Mary》开始变得和以往不同，越发的成熟路线，无论是音乐和服饰，都体现出了她真正成熟、大气的特点。随后的专辑越来越能体现出她自身的特点，2001年的《No More Drama》和当初第一张专辑《What’s the 411?》相比简直有天壤之别，更多的自主创作，让专辑更像是Mary J. Blige的个人专辑。2002年，Mary J. Blige又发行了专辑《Dance for Me》，专辑的制作人由说唱大佬Dr. Dre担纲。2003年，第七张个人专辑《Love & Life》与歌迷见面。

　　　　Mary J. Blige的专辑中有五张成为冠军专辑，数十首顶尖单曲，并且曾经在1996年凭借歌曲《I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need To Get By》和Method Man一起获得了第38届格莱美最佳说唱组合奖(Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group)，并且还在今年凭借歌曲《He Think I Don’t Know》获得了第45届格来美最佳R&B女歌手奖(Best Female R&B Vocal Performance)。
